Sussex rabbit hunters circa 1910

January 24, 2017

The 2016-17 hunting season continues in Sussex County as January fogs, ices and snows its way toward completion. Extensive fields, forests, hedgerows, marshes and buffered waterways have long made Sussex a haven for wildlife.

That wildlife in turn provided an important source of protein for Sussex families in the early 20th century as confirmed by this photograph of rabbit hunters from about 1910.

  • Delaware Cape Region History in Photographs, published every Tuesday in the Cape Gazette, features historical photos from Delaware's Cape Region - particularly - and from throughout Sussex County and Delaware generally.
