Sussex Republican women hear from Hocker and Short

April 4, 2019

At the Sussex County Republican Women’s Club meeting Feb. 27, featured speakers were Senate Minority Leader Sen. Gerald Hocker, R-Ocean View, and House Minority Leader Rep. Danny Short, R-Seaford.

Hocker talked about the shortage of doctors in Sussex County. Noting that physicians use school system quality as a factor for determining where to open a practice, he pointed out the importance of supporting continuous improvement in local schools.

Short discussed increasing the minimum wage, and how it would hurt the seniors and low-income workers it is purported to help. Very few people in the workforce except youth and part-timers are earning minimum age, he said. As new hires start out given the same pay that longtime employees have achieved, all workers would likely demand higher wages. Increased wages would necessitate raising the cost of goods for everyone, he said.

Both Hocker and Short implored club members to be actively engaged in supporting Republican legislators when the General Assembly meets. Constituents’ voices need to be heard to preserve the quality of life in Sussex County.
