Shovels full of dirt marked the start of the largest school construction project in Delaware history as Sussex Technical High School celebrated the groundbreaking for its new building and athletic fields Oct. 29.
Superintendent Kevin Carson said the 380,000-square-foot vocational school will increase capacity from 1,350 students to 1,800 when the doors open in September 2027. Once that happens, the old school will be demolished, and a new stadium will open for use by September 2028.
The school will continue to provide training for high-demand vocational careers and trades, apprenticeship programs, pathways to the military and other postsecondary options, Carson said. Also, more than 4,000 adult residents will continue to benefit from the adult education program, he added.
