Sussex Vietnam Veterans welcome national president

March 23, 2022

The Sussex County Chapter 1105 of the Vietnam Veterans of America welcomed a special guest March 15 when the organization’s new national president, Jack McManus, visited Long Neck.

McManus became national president in November. Rodger Rose, president of Chapter 1105, said this is the first time a national president has visited the chapter, which bases its meetings out of American Legion Post 28 on Route 24.

“I’m really honored,” McManus said. “We’re the only Vietnam-specific veterans organization in the country. The people who voted me in were my colleagues from the war. I think this is the first time a national president has visited Delaware, and it won’t be the last time.”

McManus served in Vietnam in the Air Force and began his work with veterans by advocating on behalf of those affected by the spread of Agent Orange. He served as Vietnam Veterans of America’s treasurer prior to being elected president.

Also visiting Chapter 1105 was Ted Wilkerson, the regional president of Vietnam Veterans of America. As a gift, McManus and Wilkerson were given quilts by members of the Quilts of Valor Foundation, which provides handmade quilts to veterans or service members who have been touched by war.
