Thanksgiving for Thousands reaches across Delmarva

November 24, 2016

For the past 22 years, volunteers have joined forces at Mountaire Farms in Selbyville to pack Thanksgiving food boxes for people in need. The event – supported by numerous civic organizations, churches and businesses – has grown from 300 boxes to 8,500 boxes this year.

As the song “Feed the World” blasted from speakers in the Mountaire warehouse, hundreds of volunteers – including many students from the Indian River School District and Sussex Tech High School – gathered early Nov. 21 to take their spot on two long assembly lines to pack boxes with all the trimmings for a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal. Three Mountaire trucks were packed with boxes for distribution on Nov. 22 to sites throughout Delmarva.

Also included in the boxes were information sheets on employment opportunities at Mountaire Farms. “We are always looking for good workers,” said Mountaire’s Roger Marino, director of communications and community relations, who founded and organizes the event.
