Three die in Christmas Eve crash near Lewes
Three people died in a two-car Christmas Eve crash at the intersection of Route 9 and Minos Conaway Road outside Lewes.
Delaware State Police say a 2016 Land Rover was traveling westbound on Route 9 about 8 p.m., when a 2008 Honda Odyssey pulled into its path from Minos Conaway Road.
The Land Rover struck the driver’s side of the Honda, causing three of the seven occupants to be ejected from the vehicle, police said. Jessica Guida, 35, of Temple, Pa., Jovie Wright, 9, of Temple, and Gerald Huss, 74, of Lewes, were all pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver, 42, and the other three passengers, a 12-year-old male, a 4-year-old male and a 67-year-old female, were all transported to an area hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Land Rover, Jason Wilcox, 46, of Millsboro, fled from the collision scene on foot, police said, but was arrested without incident on Christmas Day at his home in Millsboro. Wilcox was charged with three felony counts of leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death, four counts of leaving the scene of a collision resulting in injury, and other traffic charges. He was arraigned and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $18,500 cash bond.
Route 9 at Minos Conaway Road was closed for about four hours while the crash was investigated and the roadway cleared.
