LEWES POLAR BEAR PLUNGE PROGRAM

Tips for a ‘Bearable’ Plunge

January 27, 2020

The Lewes Polar Bear Plunge, held annually on the first Sunday in February, has developed into a truly unique Delaware happening and is Special Olympics Delaware’s most significant fundraiser.

Individuals, including many Special Olympics athletes and their family members, take the plunge into the icy Atlantic Ocean during the height of winter!

Everyone deserves a chance at a happy and purposeful life. Yet people with intellectual disabilities face doubt, barriers and low expectations. For many, Special Olympics is the only place where they find an opportunity to participate in their communities, develop belief in themselves, and feel like champions.

For every inspiring Special Olympics athlete in Delaware, there are six more people waiting for their chance. By participating in the Polar Bear Plunge, you’re helping Special Olympics Delaware reach out to one more person who wants to participate. Chill out and join thousands of other brave souls for the coolest thing you’ll do this year.

FIRST TIMER?

• Plunge in front of the Atlantic Sands where it is less crowded and more family-oriented.

• There is no rule for how far you go in; go ankle-deep or all in.

• Must wear appropriate swim attire (no thongs!)

• Allow the first wave of folks to go in. This is not a race.

• The beach will look very different coming out of the water. Have a towel-holder waving to you.

GENERAL TIPS

• Always follow all directions from safety personnel.

• Spread out on the beach.

• Bring a robe.

• Keep your feet covered until the last possible moment and consider wearing water shoes.

• Bring extra towels or a blanket to stand on.

• Wear layers and loose-fitting clothes, which are easier to get into when your fingers are cold.

• Plunge with a friend - use the buddy system.

• No alcohol or tents allowed on the boardwalk or beach.

• Do not dive into or enter the water head first.

• Do not swim past the safety divers in the water.

• Do not go near the jetties.

• Tents and drones are not allowed on the beach.

• Pets are strongly discouraged on the beach for their own safety and the safety of the bears plunging.
