An opening date is not yet available, but company officials have confirmed a T.J. Maxx is opening on Route 1 outside Rehoboth Beach. The store will be located between andThat! and Aldi.
In an email Feb. 27, T.J. Maxx public relations specialist Sabrina Stewart said the store will open at some point in the future. A press release announcing the grand opening will be issued when the store is closer to the opening date, she said.
The opening of T.J. Maxx will complete the multi-year, end-to-end renovation of a building that was once all a 56,700-square-foot Kmart. The redevelopment began in 2017, with the Kmart downsizing by nearly three-quarters to accommodate andThat! and PetSmart. Kmart officially closed its doors in early 2020, with Aldi opening in late 2021.
According to Sussex County property records, the 13-acre piece of land, which also includes the large parking lot and Chick-fil-A, was sold in November for a little more than $20 million to Coastal One Properties LLC.
