Tomatoes are a big hit during fifth annual festival

Under threatening skies Aug. 13, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market sponsored its fifth annual Tomato Festival and recipe contest.

Winners of the fifth annual Tomato Festival Recipe Contest are:

First-place grand prize: Gerald Cowan’s tomato, lettuce, bacon (reverse BLT) sandwich;
 second-place grand prize: Linda Cowan’s Bloody Mary sorbet; and
 third-place grand prize: Laura Jarman Byrum’s green tomato golden raisin cupcakes with lemon cream icing.

Appetizers: First place: Michael Tyler’s yellow fever salad.

Soups: First place: Robert Perri’s Cordoban Salmorejo;
 second place: Linda Cowan’s smoked paprika tomato soup

Entrees: First place: Gerald Cowan’s tomato, lettuce, bacon (reverse BLT) sandwich on homemade sun-dried tomato herb bread served with homemade sun-dried tomato mayonnaise; and second place:
 Mary McCluskey’s heirloom tomato tart with herbs and honey.

Dessert: First place: Linda Cowan’s Bloody Mary sorbet;
 and second place: Laura Jarman Byrum’s green tomato golden raisin cupcakes with lemon cream icing.
