Looking to take the best of one-on-one training and mix it with group training, Tom Incontrera has opened Trident Training Club outside Lewes.
Group training is often not specialized to individuals, but that’s not the case at Trident, said Incontrera, a certified personal trainer.
“There are benefits to private training. I’ve taken those benefits and paired them within the atmosphere of group training,” he said. “It’s about the members, and we want this to be a family and a community. That’s what we’re aiming for.”
Trident Training Club is located in the newest commercial space of the Vineyards development off Route 9, outside Lewes, near Redner’s Fresh Market.
Trident offers a variety of classes throughout the day. It’s open every day except Sunday. Adult group training and special classes are held in the morning; youth training and athletic development are set for the afternoon. Every other Saturday, Trident offers a bootcamp-style workout for members, their friends and other locals.
Incontrera accomplishes his training methods with a wide selection of equipment. There’s a band station, dumbbells, treadmills, sleds, weighted balls, boxes, kettle bells and power racks that allow quick transition from one exercise to the next.
These racks really help athletes with their rotational strength and power, said Incontrera.
An athlete his whole life, Incontrera said he got into personal training as a career eight years ago when he made the decision to get sober. He was living in Charleston, S.C., working as a bartender and, he said, he basically ended up homeless. With nothing to his name, he moved into his parents’ house in Fenwick Island. He ended up getting a job working at a nearby gym.
“I could have gotten another bartending job, but those around me didn’t think it was a good idea. I listened to someone else for a change,” said Incontrera. “I’ll be eight years sober in a month.”
Incontrera said he’s open about his past with the athletes he trains and their parents. It’s good for them to know they have someone to talk with if they need it, he said.
