Troop 95 hits the slopes

April 26, 2025

Troop 95 from Georgetown recently traveled to spend a long weekend on the chilly slopes of Shawnee and Camelback mountain ski resorts in the Pennsylvania Poconos.

Dressed in a colorful assortment of jackets, hats and goggles, scouts collected their ski lift passes, boots and skis at Shawnee Saturday morning. Three new scouts, slightly nervous yet determined, headed to the beginner slopes to learn the basics of skiing under the watchful eyes of their instructors. Meanwhile, the more experienced scouts wasted no time before venturing up the mountain to tackle trails like Upper Pennsylvania, Renegade, Upper and Lower Bushkill, and Lookout, filled with challenging terrain and exhilarating descents.

With faces flushed after an action-packed day on the slopes, the group wrapped up their skiing and returned their equipment. After making their way to Pocono Environmental Education Center to stay overnight, they settled in and shared tales of successes and occasional wipeouts.

The next day, scouts made their way to the dining hall for a hearty breakfast, then returned to Shawnee for another day packed full of skiing adventures. The troop divided into smaller groups based on skill level, allowing beginners to stick to the easier slopes until they felt confident enough to tackle more challenging trails, honing their skills and enjoying the beauty of the winter landscape.

As the sun began to set, the joyful laughter and shouts of excitement from the slopes mixed with the sounds of nature. Exhausted but happy, the troop returned to PEEC to eat dinner and get some sleep.

Sunday morning arrived with a fresh layer of snow blanketing the ground. After breakfast, the scouts prepared their gear and headed to Camelback for the day. At this larger resort, each scout received an armband with a card lift ticket in its pocket for use at the ski lift gates. The vast selection of trails and attractions didn’t discourage the eager scouts; instead, it fueled their eagerness to explore all that Camelback had to offer.

As the day drew to a close, many of the scouts made their way back to the eating area to catch the Super Bowl streaming live. They returned their ski gear with a sense of accomplishment and headed back to PEEC for the final night, sharing stories and heading to bed.

On Monday morning, the scouts rose with a mixture of fatigue and exhilaration. Belongings were packed, the dorm was cleaned and gear was loaded into one of the leader’s trucks, followed by breakfast. Once everything was squared away, the scouts headed back to Georgetown. The ride was filled with discussions about the highlights of the trip, their favorite slopes, and plans for future outings. Upon arrival, the troop unloaded their gear, eagerly awaiting reunion with their parents, ready to share their adventures from the weekend.
