V. George Carey, former state representative
V. George Carey, 88, of Milford passed away Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016, at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington.
He was born in Milford May 2, 1928, son of the late Vinal H. Carey and Hessie (Phillips) Carey.
Mr. Carey was a self-employed dairy, grain and chicken farmer all of his life. He was also drawn to public service, and was nominated and elected to the Delaware State House as the Representative of the 36th District, an office he held for over 25 years. During his tenure, George served on the Agriculture Committee and the Joint Finance Committee.
He served as a board member of the Southern States Cooperative, and was a member of the Slaughter Neck United Methodist Church in Milford.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen S. Carey-Wilkerson in 2014.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jeannette Carey; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dale and Cynthia Carey, and Dennis Carey, all of Milford; his son-in-law, James H. Wilkerson of Milford; two grandchildren, Ty J. Wilkerson, and Blake W. Carey and his wife Kimberly; and a great-granddaughter, Kenzie Carey.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Bill Grier for his kindness and regular visits to see George during his illness and hospitalization.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave., Milford. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016 at Slaughter Neck United Methodist Church, 23221 Argos Corner Road, Milford. Burial will follow the services in the adjoining church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in George's memory be made to the Slaughter Neck United Methodist Church, c/o Ms Ethel Graham, 10266 Coastal Hwy., Milford, DE, 19963.
