VegRehoboth extends thanks following successful Vegetarian Week

June 25, 2024

VegRehoboth would like to extend thanks for the hospitality of local restaurants and the Lewes library that helped our community celebrate National Vegetarian Week May 20-25. The week opened with a delicious Meatless Monday lunch at Cilantro Mexican restaurant. Cilantro never fails to bring terrific tastes to this comfortable eatery. Attendees shared their favorite plant-based cookbooks, with easy favorites being the new best-selling “Plant You Scrappy Cooking,” by Carleigh Bodrug, and “Go Veg With Class,” by our own local author and educator, Dorothy Greet.

Tuesday featured a wonderful evening at Indigo Indian Restaurant, where Indian culture and cuisine were celebrated with mouth-watering appetizers, a delectable variety of main courses and a scrumptious dessert. Once again, Indigo was abundantly generous in its offerings, which included take-home jars of favorite spices for Indian cooking.

The Thursday night movie, “The Last Girl,” was shown at the Lewes library, which continues to serve the plant-based community by hosting VegWinterFest. The library’s generosity in hosting so many events across organizations and activities is much appreciated. The movie, “The Last Girl,” a deeply moving 15-minute film, eloquently showed the human (woman) representation of the dairy industry, and the glaring connections and similarities between animal abuse and human abuse. We thank producer Lisa DeCrescente for joining us for the powerful post-film discussion.

Friday completed this busy week with happy hour at Saketumi restaurant. What’s not to love at Saketumi? From gracious staff to delicious appetizers, Saketumi is a favorite watering hole.

Exploring a plant-based lifestyle is on the upswing nationally, and the beach community is happily participating. More restaurants are offering plant-based meals on their menus, and our grocery stores continue to expand their plant-based food selections. VegRehoboth salutes our area restaurants for their creativity and eagerness to serve those who are living, or leaning in, to whole-food plant-based eating.

And a reminder that Rehoboth Beach VegFest, this year joining the Planet Series as Planet Delaware, is returning the weekend of Sept. 13-15, with an outdoor festival Saturday, Sept. 14, at Epworth UMC. Planet Delaware joins Planet DC, Planet Maryland and Planet Virginia with a strong focus on sustainability. We are delighted to return with a full weekend of food, art, music, speakers and fun!  Early-bird registration is now open for vendors and sponsors. Go to vegrehoboth.org for updates.
