Vernon Vickers Vane, avid car guy
Vernon Vickers Vane, 82, passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 29, 2024, in Lewes.
Vernon was born at Union Memorial Hospital July 11, 1942, the third of six kids, to Edgar and Thelma Vane. They lived in Waverly, Md., near Memorial Stadium, where, as a kid, Vernon loved the Colts and Orioles. He attended City College High School.
He went on to work at Capitol Sprinkler in Columbia, Md., and was responsible for the fire protection systems of major facilities in the region, including M&T Bank Stadium, the FBI building in D.C., and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum.
He was married to Carolyn Dickinson for 48 years. They have two sons, Randy and Scott.
An avid car guy, Vernon restored many classic cars and hotrods, including his prized 1956 Corvette. Throughout the years, he was always present at his kids’ sporting and school events.
He retired in 2012 and moved to Lewes in 2018 to be near the beaches he had visited throughout his life.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Carolyn; sons, Randy and Scott; five grandchildren; sister, Marty Cook; and many other beloved family members.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 12, at The Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore, Md.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Diabetes Association or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
