“Sussex Academy is such a great team,” said Cape coach Bill Geppert. “They have a lot of depth and really are excited for our meet. We were coming off of a big win over Tech and were a little flat. Hats off to their coaching staff for doing such a great job with their team. It was an exciting meet. Our boys did what they had to do to pull out the win. We have some depth this year on our boys’ side, and they have been working hard. We won because we swam our times.”
The Sussex Academy girls’ 200 medley relay team of Tess Mariner, Gracie Maughan, Emily Trout and Sanne Elling took first in 1:59.56. Ellen McKay garnered first in the 200 free in 2:13.04. Maughan continued by taking first in the 200 individual medley in 2:18.22. Elling followed in 26.43 in the 50 free and a 59.29 in the 100 free. Mariner won the 500 free in 6:02.55. The 200 free relay of Maughan, Eve Mundok, Addison and Ellen McKay won in 1:50.12. Maughan took first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.20. The Seahawks finished the girls’ meet in first place in the 400 free relay with Ellen McKay, Eve Mundok, Tess Mariner and Elling swimming a time of 4:06.35.
Cape’s Aya Daisey won the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke in 1:03.55 and a 1:04.80, respectively.
“This is a marquee matchup both in recent history and for years to come,” said Seahawks head coach Tom Martiner. “Both teams bring their best each year and they bring out the best in each other. Our girls’ team has tremendous depth, and though it was neck-and-neck throughout, we were able to secure the win. Our boys’ team showed great resolve and grit. We had great races by eighth-grader Jaxon Loux and senior Trey Mitchell. We look forward to seeing Cape at the conference meet.”
Cape swims Caesar Rodney Friday, Jan. 29 at the Milford Boys and Girls Club, while Sussex Academy travels to Lake Forest.
