Cape coach Ben Evick continued his Cape Henlopen Vikings Baseball Camp July 15-18, with high school-aged players at Chris Short Field in Lewes.
Evick and and varsity assistant Seth Brosius along with college players Owen Daminger, Barritt Ross and Timmy Hitchcock trained the campers in advanced base running, throwing mechanics, bunting skills, communication, hitting and advanced defensive skill work.
“The camp went great,” said Evick. “The kids are leaving with tons of information to improve as players both physically and mentally. They have worked really hard during the hottest days of the year. This week, they were lucky enough to have three pro players stop by. There are some impressive players coming up over the next few years.”
Pro players Zack Gelof of the Oakland A’s; his brother Jake, who plays in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization; and Luke Johnson, who was recently drafted by the Washington Nationals, stopped by to speak with the campers about their experience playing for Cape through college and now professionally.
“Being an incoming freshman at Cape and a baseball player, the camp gave me an opportunity to see how coach Evick runs his program,” said camper Tynin Smith. “Coach Evick worked on my batting mechanics, keeping my hands down, so I can get through the ball quicker. He also worked with my throwing mechanics, ensuring I’m not short-arming my throws. I learned a lot at the camp and look forward to next spring.”
