Virden R. Macklin, veteran, faithful church member
Virden “Sonny” R. Macklin passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Sunday, July 21, 2024, at his home in Georgetown.
Sonny was born Sept. 19, 1935, in Georgetown, to his parents W. Virden and Mildred (Rust) Macklin. He was a lifelong resident of Sussex County.
He served his country in the U.S. Navy Reserves. Sonny was employed by Nabisco Brand companies until his retirement and later employed with Proctor and Gamble and was a realtor. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Georgetown for over 50 years. Sonny was also a member of Sussex Pines County Club and Mulligan’s Pointe. Most of all, Sonny enjoyed spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by his son, Michael V. Macklin; great-grandson, Benjamin Macklin; brothers-in-law, Francis ‘Hump’ Holleger and Ernest (Ernie) Peoples.
Sonny is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Madelyn (McIlvaine) Macklin; son, Gregory ‘Greg’ Macklin (Cathy); daughter, Patti Seabolt (John); grandchildren, Adam Macklin (Katie), Jake Macklin (Jessica), Julie Rollins (Jordan), Cassidy VanPelt (David), Kristen Chalmers (Stephen); great-grandchildren, Brennan Macklin, Brody Rollins, Elizabeth Macklin, Bryant VanPelt, Blake Rollins, Sonny Macklin, Mason Macklin, Hannah Chalmers and Victoria VanPelt; and sisters, Helen Holleger and Jean Peoples.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 3, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 102 E. Laurel St., Georgetown. A time of visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. when friends and family may call.
Flowers are accepted; however, the family welcomes memorial contributions in memory of Sonny to Wesley United Methodist Church.
