Virginia Lee Caras, loved golf, bridge
Virginia Lee “Ginnie” (Savage) Caras, 93, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 25, 2024, at The Moorings at Lewes. She was born July 30, 1930, in Selbyville, to the late Thurman F. and Nelda (Jester) Savage.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Tracy Caras Harp; and sister, Lois Butterly.
Ginnie grew up in Rehoboth and graduated from Rehoboth High School in 1948. At 15, her father bought her a sailboat and taught her how to sail in Rehoboth Bay. She and her father went duck hunting, fishing, clamming, and crabbing in Rehoboth Bay, and rabbit hunting on the dunes south of Bethany Beach. She also helped him pull a seine for fish to take home and fry.
She married Paul Caras Jr. June 4, 1950, and they raised six children. While married, she took golf lessons with Walt Jones. She loved golf, and won many tournaments and met many nice people. She was a member of Rehoboth Country Club, Shawnee County Club in Milford (when her son Paul was a golf pro), and then a 30-year Sussex Pines County Club member. As a member of Sussex Pines, she was the first lady to be on the board of directors, and over the years she served on the golf committee, house committee, greens committee, president of the 18-hole Ladies Golf Association, and captain of the golf team in charge of volunteers for the McDonald’s LPGA Golf Tournament in Wilmington. She also volunteered for the Men’s Senior Golf Tournament in Myrtle Beach for three years. She also fulfilled a dream of attending the Master’s Tournament in Augusta, Ga. Through the years, she was able to get autographs from Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Ray Floyd, and Payne Stewart. She also has a photo with Fuzzy Zoeller, which he autographed.
She also loved to play bridge and played in three different groups of ladies: Milton Ladies of the Rookery South, Georgetown Ladies at Arena’s in Georgetown, and Ladies of Sussex Pines Country Club.
She enjoyed spending time with her children, especially yearly skiing trips to Killington, Vt.
She worked for 23 years as a unit secretary at Beebe Hospital on the Women’s Health & Maternity Floor, and worked many years at Bayside Health for Dr. Vincent Killeen.
She is survived by five children, Paul (Patsy), Elaine Parsons (George), Steve, Danny and Richie; 19 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces; and her brother, Skip Savage.
The family would like to give thanks to everyone at The Moorings at Lewes.
Services will be private.
