Virginia Mae Hawley, active in community
Virginia Mae Hawley, 88, of Frankford, formerly of Maryland, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Friday, Nov. 8, 2024, at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.
Virginia was born in Tiltonsville, Ohio, April 27, 1936, daughter of the late Jack Hanlin and the late Alice (Cole) Hanlin. She worked for several years as a supervisor for East Coast Ice Cream before moving to Delaware over 20 years ago. She was also employed at G&E in Ocean View in the deli department at the grocery store before retiring.
Virginia was very active with the Ocean View Eagles Club No. 4528 in Ocean View, American Legion Post 24 in Dagsboro, and East Sussex Moose Lodge No. 2542 near Roxana. She was a very friendly and outgoing person who spoke her mind. Virginia loved to dance and sing karaoke.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Ty Renshaw; and her five siblings. She is survived by her husband of 13 years, George E. Bender Jr.; two children, Tammie Kromer and her husband Wayne of Laurel, Md., and Tina Renshaw of Baltimore, Md; four stepchildren, George Bender III and his wife Janee of Seaford, Debra Sorensen and her husband Raymond of Fairless Hills, Pa., Joseph Bender and his wife Tammy of Florida, and James Bender of Levittown, Pa; six grandchildren; 19 step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Ocean View Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, where friends and family may gather after 3 p.m. Interment will be held privately.
