Volunteers’ worth is priceless

April 22, 2025

Fred Rogers once said, “Always look for the helpers.” In times of adversity, the quote is a comforting reminder that there are always individuals ready to lend a hand, offer support and make a difference. When I joined Beebe as president and CEO in March 2020, the pandemic was just beginning. Amidst the fear and disruption, what struck me then – and still inspires me now – was how many people in Sussex County stepped up to support their community healthcare system.

Over the past five years, we've faced extraordinary healthcare challenges. The pressure has been real for our patients, team members and families. Yet, through every challenge, one constant has remained: the presence of helpers. From acts of kindness to generous donations, this community has shown up for Beebe in meaningful ways.

One well-known example is our 1916 Club, a giving society that has grown to more than 500 members and raised more than $1 million to support our mission. That level of commitment is extraordinary.

Today, I want to recognize another group of million-dollar supporters – our nearly 500 volunteers.

In the last year alone, they've contributed almost 40,000 hours of service across more than 60 departments. From pet therapy visits to helping patients navigate our facilities, from supporting cancer center meal services to enhancing the patient experience in countless ways, their work adds incredible value to Beebe and the people we serve.

By any measure, their time and dedication are worth more than $1 million. But to us, their impact is priceless.

These volunteers come from all walks of life – retired professionals, students, teachers, first responders and even former healthcare workers who still want to make a difference. No matter their background, they share a commitment to serving others, and it shows in everything they do.

When we asked a few of them what they enjoy most, they shared:

  • “Just knowing I can make a difference. Giving back to my community.”
  • “Knowing I am helping patients – even if it's just a little bit.”
  • “Seeing the smiles on everyone we meet when I show up with my PAWS dog.”
  • “It feels good to help the patients, to listen if they need to talk. But I also feel good when I’ve been able to emotionally support the staff.”

These words reflect the heart of what it means to volunteer. There's no expectation of recognition or reward – just the simple joy of helping others.

Like our team members, our volunteers go through onboarding and ongoing training to ensure they're prepared to support our staff and patients safely and effectively. That level of commitment speaks volumes.

Even after the disruption of COVID-19, our volunteer program has rebounded. Today, we are nearly back to pre-pandemic levels, and the energy and spirit they bring to our hospital is something we don't take for granted.

April is National Volunteer Month and Volunteer Appreciation Week is April 20-26, so I want to take a moment to say – on behalf of the entire Beebe team – thanks a million.

To each and every one of our volunteers: Your time, your care, and your compassion are the heartbeat of Beebe. We are deeply grateful for you, and proud to serve this community alongside you.

Various volunteer roles, both clinical and non-clinical, are available throughout the healthcare system. If you're interested in volunteering at Beebe, we encourage you to call 302-645-3531 or go to www.beebehealthcare.org/volunteer.
