Wallace Herman Powell, veteran, longtime pastor

November 19, 2024

Wallace Herman Powell passed away just short of his 87th birthday, in his childhood home in Millsboro, Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024, surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer. He was reunited with his wife, Anna Christine, who preceded him in death Sept. 19, 2023.

Wallace was the only son of Adolfus “Doc” and Jessie Powell. He is survived by his two daughters, Myra Mitchell and Rebecca Kandler; two grandchildren, Matthew Friday and April Friday; and four great-grandchildren - Zoey, Kallie, Baley and Blair.

Wallace was born in Frankford, and a longtime resident of Millsboro and Lewes. He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force. After discharge, he attended Bible college to become a pastor/missionary. Wallace attended Philadelphia College of Bible, Elohim Bible College, Moody Bible Institute, and Lancaster Bible College. He spent seven years as a missionary in St. Lucia, West Indies, with his family and started several churches there. Wallace returned to Delaware and started Midway Baptist Church in Lewes. In later years, he filled in as pastor for many churches in the area.

Wallace was also a longtime employee of the Sea Shell Shop in Rehoboth. Anyone who knew Pastor Powell knew how grounded he was in his faith and his beloved devotion to his late wife, Anna Christine Powell.

He and Chris never knew a stranger. This was because they were true servants of their God and Savior Jesus Christ.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 14, at Calvary Baptist Church, 22860 DuPont Blvd., Georgetown, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Wallace’s memory to be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 22860 DuPont Blvd., Georgetown.
