The Warm and Cool theme for the March exhibit at Gallery One is a play on words. While contemplating the chilly temperatures outside with optimism for the warmth to come, the artists employ the rule of juxtaposing warm and cool colors to make a balanced composition.
In her description for “Looking South, Bethany Beach,” Laura Hickman captures both ideas perfectly. “On this cold January morning in Bethany Beach, the warm colors of the rising sun mingle with the cool colors of the dunes in shadow. In some areas, even the colors in the shadows of the sand are warm due to the reflection of the sky above, creating a calm composition of warm and cool hues,” said Hickman.
Artist Lesley McCaskill’s acrylic painting, “View From the Trail,” captures the drama of early morning light. The low light intensifies the warm colors against the cool shadowed areas.
In “Warm Bodies, Cold Feet,” an acrylic by Joyce Condry, sanderlings skitter along the water’s edge cooling their feet in the surf despite the chill of winter.
“Daydreaming,” acrylic by Jan Moffat, illustrates how perfectly nature’s palette randomly mixes warm and cool colors in a field of wildflowers.
“Reflections,” a Dale Sheldon acrylic, makes the viewer long for the warmth of summer while relishing the atmospheric colors of winter. Sunlight reflects on the water and wet sand while brightening the clouds. Warm colors of the sun against the cool blues of the sky and water enhance the atmosphere.
Michelle Marshall’s acrylic, “Sunrise Over the Marsh,” is an ethereal take on a familiar scene. As the mist burns off high in the atmosphere, the fiery morning dissolves into the waiting cool blue sky of day.
Artist Cheryl Wisbrock’s watercolor, “Rising Tide,” brings the viewer back to summer’s warm afternoon light which makes the gold and tan grasses glow against the cool grays and blues of the changing tide on the bay.
“Checkerboard Kids: Sledding,” an acrylic mixed media by Mary Bode Byrd, is part of a series of whimsical paintings depicting winter fun. Cool blues predominate, while a pop of yellow warms up the painting.
“Seaside Village,” an acrylic by Eileen Olson, is an exercise in color theory with a focus on cooler colors with hints of warmer colors to create a sense of harmony. The peaches and rusts evoke warmth while the grays and blues evoke the coolness of water and sky.
“Morning Surf,” a Dianne Shearon acrylic, visually sums up the artistic theme with the natural cool blue of the ocean balanced with a sunrise done in nature’s warm palette of orange and saffron.
