Nehemiah Myer Cohen and Samuel Lehrman opened the first Giant supermarket on February 6, 1936 in Washington, D.C. Today, there is a chain of 177 Giant supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia that employ approximately 22,000 associates. In the years between 1936 and today, Giant has built a strong relationship with Delaware farmers, featuring fresh local Delaware produce and poultry from Delaware and Delmarva growers.
