We in Lewes podcasts spotlight longtime local legends
Two well-known locals, musician Ed Shockley and sports reporter Dave Frederick, are the most recent guests interviewed on the We in Lewes podcast.
With two episodes a month, the show focuses on people of note who have helped make the area as appealing as it is unique. Producers promise no discussion of politics.
Shockley talks candidly about his boyhood in Lewes and being a founding member of the popular bands Jack of Diamonds, Vinyl Shockley, the Reminders and the Funsters. A renowned songwriter and lyricist, he describes the joy of performing and the hard work involved. Opening up about family, bands, the Doo-Dah Parade and the importance of friendship, Shockley said, “Nobody knows the world as you know it. They don't have a clue. And that's why as I've gotten older, when I visit my friends, I say, we're having a conversation just standing next to each other. What we share, we both know. We don't need words.”
Frederick, aka “Fredman,” writes a column and covers sports for the Cape Gazette, but he’s also well-known as an educator, coach, TV and radio analyst, and athlete. Not surprisingly, the interview goes exactly where he wants to go – covering his life, family, sportswriting, getting a column at the paper and what he likes to call Sesame Street by the Sea. “[It’s] where everybody has multiple muppet disorder. We all know each other in so many different ways ... it’s that kind of community. It’s supposedly downstate, but there's a level of sophistication and acceptance that doesn't exist in other places.”
Nothing escapes a Fredman opinion, from halls of fame to parent behavior on sidelines, from state championships and teaching Problems of Democracy to the pure joy of covering a grandson’s wrestling match, with another grandson at his side. Like his writing, Fredman is funny, insightful and observant.
Shockley’s episode is available now and Frederick’s will be released Tuesday, July 30, at weinlewes.com and on major podcast platforms.
