Week 26: Back to school in Cape district
Cape Henlopen School District students returned to classrooms Sept. 16 and 17. Students missed nearly three months of in-person instruction when schools shut down under the state’s COVID-19 state of emergency in mid-March. All students and staff are required to wear masks throughout the day.
For at least the first few months of school, parents and guardians have options for Cape students. Elementary-age students can attend class five days a week or take part in remote instruction at home. Middle and high school students can attend in-classroom sessions two days a week with remote learning the remaining three days or do remote learning exclusively.
About a third of students are learning from home with waiting lists at most schools for in-person instruction. Even before the start of school, a lawsuit was filed against the district by a parent claiming her daughter was not receiving equitable instruction at home.
FALL SPORTS A GO – After a four-hour meeting Sept. 17, the Delaware Board of Education reversed its original decision with a 4-3 vote to allow interscholastic sports for the fall season to begin practice Monday, Sept. 28. Due to public pressure, the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association revisited its recommendation to delay fall sports and forwarded a new recommendation to the board of education.
Expanded testing in Sussex
COVID-19 testing is now available seven days a week at three Sussex County Walgreens. Appointments are not required.
