Week 6: With COVID-19 restrictions, people still going outside

Numerous trails - such as Lewes-to-Georgetown, Junction-and-Breakwater and Gordon’s Pond – and Cape Henlopen State Park are providing relief to many people who are shut in most of the time due to COVID-19 state-of-emergency restrictions. Although not all activities are available at the park, trails are open and plenty of open space is available. Fishing is permitted on the Cape park fishing pier and at Indian River Inlet, and surf fishing is still permitted with some restrictions.
Beaches in Dewey and Rehoboth are closed, but Lewes Beach is open to those exercising or walking dogs. State park beaches are effectively closed to everything but surf fishing. Surfing on state park beaches is prohibited.

Signs of gratitude are appearing at Beebe Healthcare as well as at other locations where front-line workers are assisting the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nearly all beach-access points in Cape Henlopen State Park are closed, although the sign in the background notes that people are permitted to exercise or walk a dog or drive on to surf fish with some restrictions.

Although the Cape Henlopen State Park fishing pier is open, so far, few people are using it for fishing.

Scott Walker, a Republican running for U.S. Congress, has posted “No Lock Down” signs next to some of his campaign signs, such as this near Nassau Bridge. Walker has filed a lawsuit against Gov. John Carney for restrictions placed on businesses and residents due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Construction continues during the COVID-19 crisis on projects such as the Cape Henlopen High School addition.
In a sign of the times, this parking lot in downtown Georgetown for Sussex County government employees is normally filled to capacity each weekday morning. Many workers are now working from home.
Restaurants, pizza shops, grocery stores and other essential businesses are required to limit the number of people who walk through the door.
