We're approaching 85th anniversary of lighthouse fall

April 4, 2011

The Cape Henlopen Lighthouse, completed by the British in 1769 to mark safe passage into the mouth of Delaware Bay, fell down the face of the dunes 85 years ago on April 13, 1926. The sea eroded the dunes for many years leading up to the eventual fall of the historic structure. In the months and years after the fall of the lighthouse, area residents trekked out to the location on foot and in wagons and, following a centuries-old tradition, began salvaging stones, hardware and whatever else they could from the fallen site.
