Wetsuit exchange and surf swap set Nov. 2 in Rehoboth
The Delaware Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation announced its new wetsuit exchange program will launch during the inaugural surf swap event from 3 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 2, at Rise Up Coffee Roasters, 502 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach. The rain date is Sunday, Nov. 3.
With the aim to promote inclusivity and accessibility within the surfing community, the wetsuit exchange program is designed to ensure surfers of all ages have access to essential gear, regardless of their financial situation.
Surfers are encouraged to donate their used wetsuits, booties, hoods and gloves to the program. This initiative helps keep gear out of landfills.
Collected wetsuits will be made available for free, allowing surfers of all ages to participate in the sport without the financial burden of purchasing new gear.
By encouraging seasoned surfers to give back and creating opportunities for newcomers to enjoy the waves, the wetsuit exchange helps foster a sense of community.
“This initiative embodies our commitment to accessibility and sustainability by keeping wetsuits out of the landfill and extending their use by offering them to those in need,” said Crystal Stokowski, vice chair of the Surfrider Foundation Delaware Chapter. “We want to ensure that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, has the chance to surf year-round. We all know used gear is better than no gear.”
Along with the wetsuit exchange, the surf swap will also feature local vendors selling used surfboards, fins and gear, and art from talented local artists. Brad Allen and his Escape Hatch will provide live musical entertainment. The Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation Institute, Delaware Sea Grant, Surfgimp Foundation and Plastic Free Delaware will present educational tables, and there will be a raffle drawing to raise support for the Delaware Chapter.
Attendees can enjoy family-friendly activities and delicious offerings from Rise Up, including organic coffee, local brews and tacos.
