Where is Harbeson's new post office?

USPS spokesman says relocation announcement is coming soon
June 10, 2019

What has happened to the plan to relocate the Harbeson Post Office?

The only action so far has been the placement of an outdoor mailbox near M&D Bird World along Route 9.

Although no specific site location has been forthcoming, Raymond Daiutolo, a U.S. Postal Service spokesman, said, “The Facilities Service Office and the district are completing due diligence on a location and expect to have an official announcement soon.”

Last November, USPS real estate specialist David Wolff told Harbeson-area residents an announcement of a new site would be made by the end of the year. In the meantime, the 200 Harbeson post office box holders have been getting their mail at the Georgetown Post Office.

On Dec. 29, 2018, the Harbeson Post Office closed. Located in a small, strip shopping center at the intersection of Route 9 and Harbeson Road, the building was torn down and construction of a new Royal Farms convenience store is underway, as is a road project to improve the intersection.

During the meeting, Wolff was asked by a resident if it would take two years for the post office to reopen. He replied emphatically that it better not even take a year, and should happen within six months.

Sen. Tom Carper's spokeswoman Karen McGrath said office staff is seeking more information from postal officials in an effort to the get the project back on track.
