William Stewart Cain Jr., proud Marine veteran

1st Sgt. William Stewart Cain Jr., USMC (Ret.), 74, of Millsboro, passed away Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024, in his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Jan. 17, 1950, in Newark, N.J., a son of the late William Stewart Cain Sr. and Lillian E. (Ditzel) Cain. 

“Sarge” served his country as a proud Marine, obtaining the rank of 1st Sgt. and retiring from the USMC Reserves.  After his retirement, Sarge owned Cain Plumbing and Heating in New Castle for over 40 years.

He took pride in serving his country and supported military organizations such as the American Legion, VFW, Tunnel to Towers, DAV, Toys for Tots, and Wounded Warriors, as well as private organizations such as, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Sarge served as the past commander of American Legion Post 30 in New Castle and enjoyed serving dinners to veterans at the VFW. 

Sarge’s hobbies included crabbing, boating, fishing and gardening. He was a huge Philadelphia Eagles fan. Everyone who knew Sarge knew he had a personality like no other. He was devoted to his country as well as his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Marie Cain; a son, William S. Cain, III; a sister, Virginia Cain Swiggett and brother, Robert A. Cain

Surviving is his daughter, Jennifer M. Cain (James Francisco); grandson, Dylan A. Campese; granddaughter, Taylor Abshagen; great-grandson, Corey Terrelle Beckford Jr.; brothers, Edward M. Cain (Diane) and Gary E. Cain (Linda); sisters, Linda M. Williams (Kevin) and Lillian E. Cain;  and many nieces, nephews and friends. He is also survived by two special lifelong friends, John Defilippis and Col. Dana Shreve.

A service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 25, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.
