Wilmington man, 23, charged in Dewey Beach DUI
A 23-year-old Wilmington man faces charges after police say he was speeding through Dewey Beach June 24 while intoxicated.
Zachary Paris was speeding southbound on Route 1 at 2:20 a.m. when he turned westbound on Dagsworthy Avenue, squealing the tires of his black 2023 Range Rover, said Dewey Beach Police. Two Dewey Beach Police officers were within 10 feet of the car, which then continued speeding westbound on Dagsworthy Avenue, endangering several pedestrians on the roadway, police said.
Two officers eventually stopped the vehicle and discovered that Paris was intoxicated. Inside the vehicle, police said, they found four Alprazolam tablets, about an ounce of marijuana, $17,000 in cash, numerous rubber bands, and other currency-packaging materials.
Paris was taken to the Dewey Beach Police Department and charged with possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, two counts of first-degree reckless endangering, third-degree conspiracy, driving under the influence of alcohol, and other drug and traffic charges. He was arraigned at the Justice of the Peace Court 3 via video phone. He was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution in default of a $14,804 secured bond.
A female passenger, 31, of Hockessin was charged with possess or consume a controlled or counterfeit substance and third-degree conspiracy, both misdemeanors. She was released on her own recognizance.
