The General Federation of Women’s Clubs in Sussex County and statewide have named the Shepherd’s Office their No. 1 program to support. Members of clubs donate clothing and supplies, and serve meals weekly to homeless people in the Georgetown area, said Jim Martin, executive director of the Shepherd’s Office at 408 N. Bedford St. in Georgetown.
The office and its small army of volunteers provide five hot meals five days a week. Founded in 2019, the organization also has a food pantry, grab-and-go healthy snacks, camping supplies, hygiene items, clothing donations, support groups, a weekly church service, Bible study and outreach to those in need. Martin also works to find temporary housing in local hotels for those living on the streets or woods.
During the GFWC’s 27th annual We Care Convention in Rehoboth Beach, the organization presented Martin with $1,000 to support the needs of the homeless and in appreciation of Martin and his staff who work daily to meet their basic needs.
