A crowd estimated at between 1,600 and 2,000 filled Stango Park in Lewes Tuesday evening, July 2, to hear the local band Funsters play a concert spiked with patriotic service songs, Motown, rock and roll and original music. Based on more than 40 years of personal experience, I would say it’s the largest crowd to ever fill Stango Park for a concert or any other event. With July 4th falling in the middle of the week this year, and classic summer weather, it’s a blockbuster week throughout Delaware’s Cape Region. Susan at Lloyd’s Market said don’t wait to buy hot dog rolls and hamburger buns. “Even the bread trucks are having a hard time getting here through the traffic.”
The Funsters will be back on the stage tonight, but this time on the Bandstand in Rehoboth Beach for a pre- and post-fireworks concert. Rehoboth Beach, in a real stroke of genius, started hiring the Funsters several years ago for fireworks night to keep the large crowds entertained following the fireworks. With a fun concert to listen to, the crowds are in less of a hurry to exit the gridlocked resort which helps the efforts of public responders charged with the tough job of traffic control.
Rock and roll and traffic control: another successful fusion that has evolved through the past couple of decades.
