GIFs (Graphic Interchange Format), images consisting of frames that play like a quick animation, are a cornerstone of millennial internet culture. Tumblr, a microblogging site where users can post text and images, is filled with GIFs of films. Used as both a “reaction image” or just to complete one’s “Tumblr Aesthetic”, blogs are rife with GIFs and some appear again and again. Whether this is indicative of the quality or quote-ability of the films or just that they stir up a sense of nostalgia while fitting a blog theme is up for debate.
In reverence of Revival House’s screening this month (and the eternally GIF-able) Princess Bride, here’s 4 GIF worthy movies to add to your blog.
1. Princess Bride (1987)
One of the most easily quotable films ever, Princess Bride appeals to a sense of childhood nostalgia while still having enough substance to be tolerable grown-up film. Want to be reminded of all your childhood princess dreams? As you wish.
2. Almost Famous (2000)
In a perfect combo of rock and roll, love, and sadness, Penny Lane almost makes desperation look glamorous. Whether your goal is to travel and write like William, make it big like Russell, or be a “Band-Aid” like Penny, you can be reminded of your “almost” dreams in dramatic spurts.
3. Pulp Fiction (1994)
A mix of pop culture references, black comedy, and an added dose of glamorized drug use makes Tarantino’s piece de resistance a Tumblr darling. Pulp Fiction has solidified itself as its own pop culture reference now, with Mia Wallace being #goals for every girl dreaming of the perfect bob and button-down combo.
4. The Breakfast Club (1985)
The quintessential teen film, nothing can convey a sense of angst like a second-long GIF of a brooding Allison. Combine teenage drama with more than few thought-provoking quotes and you’ve got yourself the perfect GIF to say: “I’m pensive and I hate my parents.”
Got any other suggestions for movies to GIF up your blog? Want to try and convince me it’s pronounced with a soft “g” sound? Let us know! See you at this month’s Revival House at Milton Theatre on the 18th!
