The lighthouses of Acadia
One of the most famous lighthouses in the Acadia National Park area is Bass Harbor Head Light, located on Mount Desert Island near Tremont, Maine. It dates back to 1858 and is the only lighthouse accessible by car on the island. BY RON MACARTHUR

Egg Rock Light in Frenchman's Bay near Bar Harbor, built in 1875, was automated in 1976. The lighthouse is unique because the brick light tower sits in the middle of the former wooden light keeper's house. The entire island is now a bird sanctuary and favorite spot for seals. BY RON MACARTHUR

We are drawn to lighthouses as reminders of a bygone era. More than 60 lighthouses dot the coast of Maine. That total is among the most of any state, but only about half of those in Michigan with more than 3,200 miles of shoreline along the Great Lakes.
