On a recent visit to Tangier Island on the lower Chesapeake, I saw a rich mix of church and state at a couple of different places. High on the town's water tower, one of the most visible landmarks for mariners in that part of the world, a large cross proclaims the faith of the townspeople. On a crab shanty built over the water along one of the entrances to the town's harbor is further evidence that the islanders like their blend of sacred and secular. On a white flag pole the Stars and Stripes whip in the wind while a large sign on the same property proclaims a strong belief.
God bless America and the first amendment to the constitution!
