I call the trail The Loop. It loops between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach with the new Gordons Pond Trail in between on the ocean side of Lewes-Rehoboth Canal and the Junction and Breakwater Trail on the inland side of the canal.
You never know what you'll see. One day a yellow box turtle crossing the trail. Another day two indigo buntings flashing iridescent blue in the morning light.
Then last weekend, I looked off in the distance from the Gordons Pond Trail toward the canal and there was a runabout motorboat high and dry in the tall marsh grass. Another vessel was nearby, in the water. Might have been Coast Guard. Might have been Marine Police. Might have been Tow Boat US.
I scratched my head wondering how the vessel's operator found his or her way out of the canal and up on the bank. It was morning. Maybe in the high tide the night before the captain strayed from the course, softed up into the tall grass and couldn't get out before the tide left.
The vessel didn't look damaged and hopefully no one was hurt.
I'd much rather see colorful birds, deer, and smiling faces passing on the trail (and there are hundreds of those) than people in trouble for one reason or another.
