Lord Baltimore Lions learn about Leader Dogs for the Blind
Members of the Lord Baltimore Lions Club attended the Leader Dogs for the Blind Dinner held recently in Milford. Approximately 140 Lions and guests gathered to learn about leader dogs and how these skillfully trained animals empower people who are blind or visually impaired with lifelong skills for independent travel.
The guest speaker was Leader Dogs representative and Lion Pauline Ulrey, a member of the Southport Lions Club of Indiana. Ulrey told the story of losing her sight at 26 months of age through a fuse box explosion in her house caused by a lightning strike.
She introduced her leader dog Satch, who is a 2-year-old retriever. During her talk, she engaged the audience with stories of how she has lived her adult life as a self-sufficient and independent person with the support of her leader dogs. Ulrey informed the audience that Satch is her 10th dog and first retriever. Her previous dogs were all German shepherds.
Leader Dogs for the Blind was founded by three Detroit-area Lions Clubs members in 1939. Lions Clubs in District 22D, including the Lord Baltimore Lions, actively support the work of this organization on behalf of those who are blind or visually impaired.
