Work underway at Mulberry Street home in Lewes

May 4, 2016

Work has begun on a Mulberry Street home that was the subject of much discussion in Lewes over the last few years. East Coast Structural Movers has lifted the home at 302 Mulberry Street in preparation for a new foundation.

The owners of the home initially sought to demolish the structure in 2014, but the request was denied by the city's historic preservation commission. The home's contractor and a local home mover testified prior to a vote that it would be unsafe to lift the home.

Owners then asked the commission's permission to disassemble the home piece-by-piece and reassemble it with salvageable original materials after a new foundation was poured. That request was denied in 2015, and affirmed by the city's board of adjustment on appeal.

Now, the owners have moved forward with lifting the home and work on the renovation of the rest of the home should soon follow.
