La Tonalteca offers savory Mexican fare

Millsboro location adds extra convenience

La Tonalteca has revamped the former Bonanza building with a south-of-the-border kick.

The well-known Mexican restaurant just opened in Millsboro March 17, but the business is already getting good feedback, according to Ramiro Herrera.

The first La Tonalteca opened in Dover more than 10 years ago. Brothers Ramiro and Benjamin Herrera partnered with Natanael Cedillo to manage 12 La Tonalteca locations in Delaware, Pennsylvania and Buffalo, N.Y.

Ramiro Herrera lives in Georgetown, central to the Millsboro, Rehoboth Beach and Milford branches he manages.

Many of Rehoboth’s La Tonalteca customers came from the Millsboro area, Herrera noted. The new Millsboro location is convenient for the regulars.

“We see a lot of customers we know. It feels like this restaurant’s been here forever,” Herrera said.

La Tonalteca offers classic Mexican fare, such as fajitas, chimichangas, tacos and more. All of the food, including chips and salsa, is made fresh daily, said Herrera.

“We’re the same Tonalteca that everyone knows,” said Herrera.

Herrera said the restaurant keeps convenient lunch and dinner prices for people who go out everyday.

The restaurant is festively bright, with colorful and traditional décor to accent the dining experience. Each table and chair is hand painted with scenes of the desert, exotic fruit, slow-moving rivers, flowers and more.

The name “La Tonalteca” derives from the family’s hometown of Tonala in Mexico. A queen led the old tribe there, so “La” refers to the woman. Herrera said all of the furniture is painted in Tonala, as well.

Every Wednesday will feature $2.99 lime margaritas, and there are daily lunch specials Monday to Friday. A full bar is always open.

A live mariachi band performs on occasion, traveling from table to table, which Herrera said the customers enjoyed.

La Tonalteca is open Monday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; and Sunday noon to 9 p.m.

The restaurant is located at 28605 Dupont Boulevard in Millsboro. For more information, call 302-934-9111.
