The Cape baseball team delivered the goods May 24 in the opening round of the DIAA state tournament, beating visiting Salesianum 2-1.
Sophomore pitcher David Erickson went the distance, striking out seven while delivering the first run of the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI double. Erickson was chased home on a hit down the line by his catcher Richard Carey, giving Cape a 2-0 advantage.
Sallies picked up a run in the top of the sixth, but Erickson shut it down for the win.
“I was glad coach Evick showed confidence in me to start this game, and I was never nervous, not for a second. I live for moments like this,” said Erickson.
Nick Robino threw a complete game for Sallies while recording eight strikeouts.
Cape moved to the quarterfinals Thursday, May 26, and was to face St. Mark’s at Frawley Stadium at 4 p.m.
