The Richard Allen Coalition and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority hosted the Juneteenth celebration June 18 at the Richard Allen School in Georgetown. The day began with a parade through town led by the Buffalo Soldiers. Juneteenth is a celebration of June 19, 1865, when the Union Soldiers entered into Galveston, Texas, to announce the General’s Order 3, ensuring adherence to Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation issued two years earlier. The day became a celebration thoughout many cities in the years since as the day African-Americans all were freed from slavery.
Vendors were on hand to offer information about health, voter rights and serve food for attendees. Games and competitions were held and a car show was a highlight of the day. Christy Taylor Music Studios provided the entertainment for the day.
