Junction and Breakwater Trail getting facelift

Parts of trail to shut down over next two weeks
July 8, 2016

Portions of the Junction and Breakwater Trail, originally constructed in 2003, will undergo repairs and renovation beginning Monday, July 11. Nearly 2 miles of trail surface will be restored on sections between Hebron Road, at the south end of the trail, and the Holland Glade pedestrian bridge, all near Rehoboth Beach.
Smaller segments of the trail will be repaired between the Hawkseye community near Lewes and the Wolfe Neck parking lot trailhead.
Repairs will focus on reconstructing rough exposed rock trail sections, which will be resurfaced with stone dust to create a smoother trail, said Susan Moerschel, Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation trails program manager. Work to eliminate areas of standing water and washouts is also planned, and fencing will be replaced.
Contractor George & Lynch will complete the project in two stages, Monday, July 11, through Friday, July 15 and Monday, July 18, through Friday, July 22. The trail will be open for use Saturday, July 16, and Sunday, July 17, Moerschel said.
The Junction and Breakwater Trail and the Gordons Pond Trail in Cape Henlopen State Park are part of a 15-mile regional network linking Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. The Junction and Breakwater Trail between Gills Neck Road and the Hawkseye community in Lewes will be open continuously.  Officials encourage trail users to use the Gordons Pond Trail for recreational activities while the restoration project is underway.
This trail restoration is a cooperative project between DNREC’s Division of Parks and Recreation and the Federal Recreational Trails Program. For questions on this project and for up-to-date information, contact Superintendent Paul Faircloth at Cape Henlopen State Park at 645-8983.
