And for this week, Riverdale on Indian River

September 7, 2016

Last Tuesday’s historic photo featured a 1970 aerial photograph of Rosedale Beach on Indian River.  This week we move downriver a ways to the next point where the quiet little community of Riverdale lies nestled in a grove of tall loblolly pines. Riverdale occupies a piece of ground known as Yellowbank Point.

When this photo was made 46 years ago, all of the land around the breezy point was farmed, primarily by people whose ancestors reach back into Native American days. Dee Andrews and Lloyd Teitsworth made this 35 mm color slide as part of the Delaware Project.  That project includes hundreds of aerial images of landmark places in Delaware recorded in March of 1970.

Next week’s historic photo will show an aerial image from this same project that includes Rosedale Beach, Riverdale and Oak Orchard.
