Delaware Election Postcard From 1908

September 21, 2016

This postcard from the Caley Collection in Delaware Public Archives gives an idea of the kind of election materials that circulated back in 1908. The Democratic candidate for governor that year was Dr. Rowland G. Paynter of Georgetown, one of the men pictured here. He was a descendant of Samuel Paynter of Drawbridge - where Route 1 crosses the Broadkill River - who was elected governor in 1823. Republican Simeon S. Pennewill defeated Dr. Paynter in the 1908 election. This is one of thousands of photographs in the George and Irene Caley Postcard Collection.
