Whayland Co. hires John Russ as senior project manager
The Whayland Co., with headquarters in Laurel and clients throughout Sussex County and the eastern shore of Maryland, announced the addition of Senior Project Manager John Russ to its southern Delaware management team.
Russ is responsible for managing Whayland's ongoing projects, splitting time between the company's main offices in Laurel and various job sites throughout the region.
"I'm really excited about this new opportunity and the challenges that lie ahead," says the 45-year-old resident of Hebron, Md. "Every day I've been on the job thus far has confirmed that I made the right decision in coming to work for Whayland. Each day is definitely different with new sets of challenges, which is something I really enjoy."
In his role as senior project manager, Russ serves as a sort of conduit between clients of the Whayland Co., and the men and women working in the field. His job is to remove any roadblocks that could ultimately hamper the timely completion of the company's projects, including engineering issues, paperwork questions and design concerns.
Russ comes to Whayland after a long career in related industries, including the last 12 years as an operations manager for a company in Salisbury, Md. His background also includes experience in the electrical and HVAC industries, as well as nearly a dozen years with United Parcel Service and four years serving his country in the United States Marine Corps.
"I really feel like all of the things I've done in the past have prepared me for what I'm doing now. For example, my previous experience allows me to have a diverse knowledge of many facets that are critical to the commercial construction process," says Russ. "We have great superintendents here at Whayland and everyone looks at things a little bit differently, and that allows us to deliver a better end product. And that's really what we're all here to do."
In addition to his career, Russ is also a Baptist lay pastor and spends a significant amount of time visiting patients in local hospitals and nursing homes, as well as coaching young people on the football and lacrosse fields.
He's been married to his wife, Nacole, for 24 years and has two children, Rachel, 17, and Cole, 14. He is also a lifelong resident of Delmarva, graduating from Cambridge-South Dorchester High School in 1988.
He began his career with the Whayland Co. Aug. 18.
"We're happy that John made the decision to join our team here at Whayland, and we're certainly looking forward to a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship," says Steve Hentschel, president of the Whayland Co. "He's already made a big difference in just the few weeks that he's been here, and we feel his experience and leadership capabilities will be a huge asset for our company for many years."
