Dwight Tingle, Cape’s head basketball coach for boys for the last eight seasons, has handed in his official letter of resignation from the basketball position and will continue to serve as a teacher of special education at the high school.
Tingle won the Henlopen Conference Coach of the Year Award and state Coach of the Year Award in 2004-05. “Shemik Thompson in 10th grade, Brandon Leggins in 11th and Kyle White a senior - that was one great ball club,” Tingle said.
That team lost to Caravel in the semifinals of the state basketball tournament.
"My plan is to continue to work within the school system, to do some volunteer work, finish my master’s degree, but most importantly, spend time with my sixth-grade son, D.J. I’m a single father. Ever since I got custody two years ago I noticed that I just didn’t have the same energy I had prior to getting him. It’s not fair to the program or my son - first and foremost I’m a father. I also have a two year old son Jamison who was at most of the basketball games and it allows me more time to spend with him as well.
My real job is being an educator and a teacher. I noticed it coming on last year and thought about stepping aside; obviously, I want the job to land in good hands.”
The Cape district is currently in the process of interviewing for teaching positions, and there are several within the district, including two in physical education, which rarely happens.
