President Kennedy in Delaware, Nov. 14, 1963

November 8, 2016

Less than eight days before his assassination in Dallas, Texas, President John  F. Kennedy helicoptered into Delaware to cut the ribbon on the new I-95 turnpike between Delaware and Maryland.

“This symbolizes the partnership between the federal government and the states, essential to the progress of all our people,” said Kennedy in remarks that day.

He was joined that day with two Delmarva Peninsula natives, Delaware Gov. Elbert N. Carvel, left, and Maryland Gov. Millard Tawes. Following Kennedy’s assassination, the turnpike’s name was changed to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway.
