John Wakefield Angus III, powerful advocate

December 12, 2016

John Wakefield Angus III, 65, beloved husband of Debora Bergeron Angus and devoted father of Kristin Westmoreland, Kimberly Reilly, and Kathleen Angus, passed away peacefully Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016, surrounded by the love of his family.

John was a retired lobbyist and lawyer following a successful professional career that brought him to the Washington, D.C. area, where he and Debi raised his family. After graduating from St. Michael's College in Vermont, where he was student body president, he attended law school at George Washington University.

His career started at the Federal Maritime Commission where he was afforded the opportunity to be involved with the shipping industry that captured his curiosity and would eventually turn into a passion. John became partner at Preston Thorgrimson Ellis & Holman (now K&L Gates) and later a founding partner of the Duberstein Group. He was dedicated to promoting the maritime industry, ultimately as the leader of The Propeller Club.

John was a powerful advocate not only for his clients, but also for those in his personal life, often going to extremes to ensure those he loved were treated justly. And his absolute joy was spending time with his friends and family, more often prioritizing family over profession despite the rigors of his industry. He leaves a legacy of generosity, compassion and family values that will be always missed.

The ability to command a conversation reflected his larger than life personality and intellect that was grounded by humility and generosity. A sweeping generosity that was felt immediately by all those encountered. His infectious laugh, unparalleled advice, and tremendously warm heart had the uncanny ability to leave lasting impressions and bring joy to everyone.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in Garden City, N.Y., where he attended Chaminade High School, John was proud of his New York roots.

He leaves behind his devoted wife Debora; daughters Kristin Westmoreland (Travis) of Washington, D.C., Kimberly Reilly (Michael) of Lewes, and Kathleen Angus of Rehoboth; grandchild Bodie Reilly as well as one on the way; brothers, Jeffrey Angus (Margaret), Peter Angus (M. Alyson), and James Angus; sister Patricia Angus; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, Dec. 15, at 11 a.m., at St. Edmond Catholic Church, 409 King Charles Ave, Rehoboth Beach, where friends may call beginning at 10 a.m.

Burial will be held Friday, Dec. 16, at 11 a.m., at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 32112 Vines Creek Road, Dagsboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Delaware Valley Alzheimer's Association at <http://tinyurl.com/ALZ4JWA>
