I am writing in response to the letter by Glenn Schuster in which he expressed disagreement with my opinion regarding the lack of qualifications of Betsy DeVos for the position of secretary of education. While I certainly respect the right of one to disagree with the positions of another, I do not respect the opinions of one who makes inaccurate assumptions about the other person in attempting to defend the credibility of their argument.
Mr. Schuster begins by wondering why I feel so enlightened when it comes to education. Mr. Schuster does not know me at all. I have worked in education for 45 years as a teacher in private and public schools, as a special educator, a special education director and a college professor. So, indeed, I do speak as one "enlightened" on education issues - most particularly in the area of special education. As I noted in my letter to Sen. Lopez, Ms. DeVos displayed no knowledge in the area of special education in her confirmation hearings, and this is of deep concern to me.
Mr. Schuster then states that he is sure that if I had children going to school in a situation where no quality public schools were available, I would be of a different opinion regarding Ms. DeVos. Mr. Schuster makes this statement with no knowledge of my experiences or opinions regarding this matter. I am puzzled as to why he is "sure" about how I would feel about such a personal matter.
Mr. Schuster concludes his letter by stating that Ms. DeVos is nominated for the position of secretary of education and nothing else. This is indeed true. That being said, she should indeed be informed and knowledgeable of the multitude of issues facing public education, and be committed to work toward the provision of high-quality educational experiences for all students, including those with disabilities.
When one drifts from facts and begins arguments with statements discrediting the intent and qualifications of those who disagree, one distracts from any creditable points which they might be attempting to make.
